Orthopedic and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Hands on Training Cadaveric Workshops

Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, in collaboration with professional associations, conducted three hands-on training cadaveric surgical workshops.

 

The first work shop was on cadaveric Arthroscopy surgical skills development. It was conducted on 27th and 28th June 2025 in collaboration with Sri Lanka Orthopaedic Association.

 

The second workshop was an advanced course on head and neck flap harvesting and reconstruction, which was conducted on 22nd and 23rd July 2025 in collaboration with the Department of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and AO Craniomaxillofacial Surgery (AO CMF).

 

The third workshop, the orthopaedic surgical skills development on cervical spine surgeries, was conducted on 27th July 2025 in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Orthopaedic Association & Sri Lanka Spine Society.

 

Human cadavers preserved using Phenoxyethanol-based preservation techniques was used workshop which gave more life-like appearance and more softer embalming compared to traditional formalin-based preservation.

 

These training session was designed for the orthopedic surgical trainees to develop their hand skills on specific surgical procedures. Leading international and national experts in the field outlined anatomy, steps in performing different surgery, harvesting technique and clinical utility of different procedures by lectures followed by demonstration of technique in cadaveric specimens.

 

Senior Prof S.G. Yasawardene, Prof. Harsha Dissanayake and Dr. Sajith Edirisinghe, representing the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medical Sciences and Dr. Ananda Rathnayake, and Dr Suresh Shanmuganathan, representing the Department of Oral & maxillofacial surgery, Faculty of Dental Sciences, were the resource persons for respective relevant courses and involved in organising these workshops from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura aspect.
